In a few words…

Kristen approaches printmaking as a storytelling medium. She wrestles with the concept of home and belonging. Kristen’s works draw inspiration from nature and the human sillhouette as a form of absence. Belonging and displacement can be a beautiful dance between connection and absence. For Kristen, home is represented by fragments of physical spaces, rich hues of color, and emotional experiences. Having traveled to over sixty countries, a piece of home and a part of her heart exists in each location. Familiarity exists everywhere. Loss exists everywhere. There is a balance between the two and an importance of acknowledging the distance between everything. For example, distance is represented in a boat returning to shore or two people standing near each other.

Her art is a currated selection of limited editions prints that often utilize the. technique ‘à la poupée’ where a printmaker creates full color prints in a single pass through the press. This is achieved by selectively wiping different colors on the etched surface. Each piece reflects the intentionality to return to familiar landscapes and colors. Because home has many different meanings, the collection features many different printmaking techniques that express this complexity.

While Kristen consistently revisits reoccuring themes in her work, she also welcomes commissions and collaborations that invite a dialogue between artist and the viewer. Printmaking itself resists the urge for mass production and automated technology. Kristen’s practice embraces the intentional and rymthic relationship between the master printer and the press.
